How we started:
Back in distant 2004, Spacewolfs2004 registered on eBay to sell some left-over bits from a Space Wolves box set. What started as left-overs soon mutated into a small range of Space Marine bits. From Space Marines to Tyranids. From Tyranids to Imperial Guard. Spacewolfs2004's experiment in tidying up the garage fast became an eBay phenomenon.
Why do we do this:
Like other eBay sellers, we decided to take the big, giant leap from eBay seller to independent Internet retailer. In 2006, we registered a business under the name The-War-Lord and set up a very primitive website the-war-lord.com with our original range of 2000 products. Our eBay customers supported the website wholeheartedly. Our following grew stronger.
As we increased our range and customer base, it became apparent that our poorly hand-coded website simply couldn't cope with the demands it was facing. We invested a lot of blood, sweat and slaves in building a more sophisticated website. With the new website came a new motivation to break away from eBay and strike out on our own.
Our range of products expanded - more Warhammer 40K, more Fantasy. We branched into other hobby products like gaming aids, gaming accessories and scenery. We stocked little known games, new games as well as old favourites. What started as a small pile of stuff next to a computer in a spare room grew to fill a well-organised, reasonably-sized warehouse.
Circa 2008, we adopted the name The Combat Company, a move we are still questioned about today. For one, we wanted to eliminate the difficulty of the hyphens in the-war-lord. Most importantly, we wanted to create an image for our business which reflected its true nature - we had made the transformation from part-time eBay seller to full-time professional retailer. Our company was no longer the labour of one person, but of a bunch of like-minded, dedicated people.
The Combat Company as a brand is the embodiment of our business philosophy.
As a fourteen year old, I ventured into my local games store. Alas, I could not afford any of their products (and still cannot today). No matter how many lawns I mowed or cars I washed, I couldn't save enough money to start an army, let alone buy that really cool commander or battle tank I wanted.
My first army was a used Space Wolves army I bought from a friend. My pride and joy. I still play with it today, at my local club and in tournaments.
By providing a comprehensive range of gaming products at discounted prices, I hope more people are encouraged to pick up some dice and a brush and see what it's really like to build and command your own army.
We will always match the prices of our domestic competitors, but we can't always match the prices of our international competitors. We have the best prices you can find for most products and we will ship in-stock products with a 1 to 3 day turnaround.
An equally important part of our business is our support of the gaming community. We're here for the long haul. We show up to local and national events. We sponsor and attend gaming tournaments as retailers. Where we can, we compete. We sponsor existing clubs all around Australia and we're actively involved in starting new clubs.
The Combat Company today
Today we have one of the best websites dedicated to tabletop wargaming in the world. It's easy to use, has tonnes of pictures of our 10,000 different products. We're among the first to know about and supply the newest games.
I now work for the business full time, which means I can answer emails quickly, update the website instantly and process orders on the same day when possible.
We now attend Australia's largest tabletop gaming conventions. We had a great debut at MOAB 2009, rocked CANCON 2010, Leviathan 2010, Phenomenon 2010 and Wagga Waaagh 2010. We're setting the bar high now and will continue to wow our customers and competitors at future events.
We are sponsoring WW40K - Australia. Our alliance with WW40K has a very bright future - the guys play the game with the same values we hold in our business and organise great events we are proud to support.
And we still run our popular eBay store http://stores.ebay.com.au/thecombatcompany.
Where The Combat Company is headed
Without giving away the trade secrets, we'll expand our ranges of tabletop wargame miniatures and gaming accessories. We'll improve the website and incorporate fancy new features.
We are building a community, free from the tyranny of multinational corporations with hordes of copyright lawyers and arrogance. We do what we want, when we want, how we want it. And so far it's been going pretty well.
If you have any wild ideas, suggestions, or desires to be a part of The Combat Company and help in building the biggest wargaming website in the world, don't hesitate to contact us.
